Are Google AdWords Worth Your Buck?

Written by Jon Bergan on the 04/10/2007

Do you spend hundreds of dollars a month paying Google for advertisement space on their web site? If you do, then you’re probably wasting a lot of your hard-earned dollars. The truth of the matter is that you can obtain just as much success through Google and similar web sites without spending a cent. The catch is that you have to put in a bit of hard work on a regular basis instead of simply letting Google do all the hard work for you. The result though is far superior to anything the money you pay to Google can bring to the table and thus is much more worth your while.

Let me put it to you like this. Would you rather pay someone a few hundred dollars a month to appear somewhere random on a web site every once in awhile or would you rather appear at the top of search engine results each and every time? Obviously the answer is the latter. Statistics show that the majority of users will click on search engine results before even considering the sponsored/advertiser links. I am definitely one of these users. As such, it would be in your best interests to focus your money elsewhere such as paying someone to optimise your site for SEO purposes rather than throwing wads of cash at an automated system.

Google AdWords definitely works for some people. Some people have enough money to throw piles of cash at both Google and SEO experts, however most of us small business owners simply don’t have the funds to be divulging in such luxuries. As a small business owner, I would definitely be pouring my pennies into having a fully optimised web site rather than attempting to promote something that will never appear at the top of search engine results no matter how much cash I throw at Google. We should make it clear here and now that purchasing Google AdWords does NOT influence your search engine ranking in any way whatsoever. All it does is gives you a little piece of advertising space on their web site every once in awhile. It’s up to you to determine whether this is worth your buck.

Ultimately all small business owners must be measuring how their marketing strategies fare each and every month. If Google AdWords is bringing a large number of users through to your web site, then it’s definitely working for you, however chances are you could save a large sum of cash simply by having an optimised web site. The differences are plain and simple. An optimised site with a high search engine ranking will always bring more users to your site than a paid advertisement and the beauty is that an optimised site will always be the far more cost effective approach in the long run. Consider these differences next time you sign a cheque to Google. Your decision might just put a smile on your face.
